Informatics Developer/Sr. Informatics Developer

Brisbane, CA
Full Time
Experienced
Gate Bioscience is a venture-backed, preclinical biotech company creating a new class
of medicines called Molecular Gates. Our therapeutics are small molecules that aim to
cure diseases by selectively eliminating harmful extracellular proteins at their origin:
inside the cell. Every extracellular protein—of which there are more than 4,000—must
pass through a single channel in the cell before it can be secreted into the body.
Molecular Gates bind to this channel, setting up a “gate” that recognizes and blocks a
specific, disease-causing protein from exiting. With nowhere to go, the protein is
degraded instead of being secreted. By eliminating the harmful protein at the source,
Gate aims to eliminate the disease for patients. Founded in 2021, Gate is backed by
Versant Ventures, a16z Bio + Health, ARCH Venture Partners, and GV. Learn more at

The Role:

This is a full-time position for an Informatics Developer/Sr. Informatics Developer based
in Brisbane, CA.  This role will build and lead drug discovery workstreams through
developing and maintaining robust computational tools in collaboration with lab
scientists and software engineers.  It is well suited for someone who is excited to take
on responsibility in the foundational stages of an exciting biotech start-up. The role
requires a strong background in informatics with prior experience in the drug discovery
industry.

In this role you will:
  • Establish pipelines for ingesting, tidying, and processing data,
  • Build and maintain an internal database of assay data and target and molecule properties,
  • Prototype, develop, and scale novel tools to facilitate scientific analyses.
  • Maintain external computational tools across multiple functional areas (e.g. cheminformatics and structural biology)

What to expect if you join us:

In the first month, you will work closely with Gate’s computational team to understand
the current suite of tools and their roles in enabling our lab and data scientists to
develop and evaluate Molecular Gates. This includes current cheminformatics and
structural biology software, data processing pipelines for various functional assays,
code to enable communication across biological interfaces, and our in-house database
of assay results, molecule, and targets.

By three months, you will be able to maintain and improve our existing computational
tools such that users can robustly utilize them without additional assistance. You will
understand the landscape of computational infrastructure needs within the company
and be able to coordinate external resources to further develop existing and new tools
for research.

By six months, you will have developed a deep understanding of the data landscape at
Gate and engineer an appropriate database that captures the data structure and
relevant relationships within the data. At this time, you will work closely with our lab and
data scientists to identify and prototype new tools to enable analyses. You will
communicate and establish expectations for these novel computational tools.

Required Skills:

  • Expertise with small molecule drug discovery data workstreams
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills and a penchant for parsimonious solutions
  • Expertise in a scripting language (preferably Python)
  • Experience creating and managing databases (Postgres/SQL)
  • Experience integrating various scientific applications (Docker, AWS, software APIs)
  • Bonus: R, R Shiny, cheminformatics experience

Education:

  • Degree in Bioinformatics, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in informatics in the drug discovery industry.

Compensation:

Below is the expected salary range for this position. Individual compensation is based
on various factors, including level, experience, education, skill set, and geographic
location. This range is for our San Francisco Bay Area, location and may be adjusted to
